Mr. Obama, having witnessed an incredible amount of horror on youtube, has decided that it is time to reconsider inviting Iranian diplomats to have hotdogs on the 4th of July this year.
At yesterday’s press conference, Obama said, “we’ve experienced the searing image of a woman bleeding to death on the street. While this loss is raw and extraordinarily painful, we also know this: those who stand up for justice are always on the right side of history.” Now, 24 hours later, it seems that justice should be served and hotdogs should be denied.
Just a few weeks ago, a man walked into the Holocaust Museum in Washington and killed a guard there. This incident reminded us of hate, vicious hate that had spawned a genocide that had led to millions declaring “never again; not on our watch.” But I’m scared for the world right now because we have become voyeurs. We seem content to sit back and watch people bleed to death on the streets, while we eat our own hotdogs and refuse to help.
How many have to die in Iran before we do something besides shake our fists? How many weapons does North Korea have to test, how many nations have to develop weapons of mass destruction, and how many people have to be exterminated like bugs in the Sudan before we act?
Mr. President, I don’t have all the answers to these questions. I don’t know what we should do. But you don’t either, and that scares the hell out of me. One thing I can believe, however, is that HOTDOGS aren’t going to end the bloodshed.
