This is a letter that I have sent to the Representative Richard Neal (D-MA) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA) regarding Senator Harry Reid’s plan for oil sanctions in Iran. Please contact congress and get involved.
Senator Harry Reid is proposing sanctions on companies importing oil into Iran. This plan is inadequate for several reasons. Oil sanctions hurt the people of Iran who are resisting the Ahmadinejad/Khamenei regime. Senator Reid’s plan also does not target the Iranian Revolutionary Guard or the military resources of Iran which constitute the real threat to the region’s security. Most importantly, oil sanctions are unlikely to gain the support of China and Russia and, thus, will be completely ineffective.
President Obama is drafting a plan that would use our intelligence resources to focus sanctions on resources imported and exported by the government and the social elites. Combined with a noticeably increased enforcement of patrols in the region, this will effectively shut down the weapons trade to Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The government also needs to use our technological capabilities to defeat Iranian government censors and allow free communication within the country. This will give voice to the people of Iran who are defying the Ahmadinejad/Khamenei regime, adding pressure to the regime from the inside without direct Western intervention.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
James Miller
